How to Rank Higher on Google Maps

Ranking Higher Is About More Than Just Your Profile
A lot of local service businesses think ranking higher on Google Maps is as simple as filling out their Google Business Profile. That's a great start, but it's only one piece of the puzzle.
To move up in the Map Pack and stay there, you need to build trust with Google across multiple signals at the same time. Here is exactly how to do it.
Step 1: Fully Complete Your Google Business Profile
An incomplete profile is an immediate disadvantage. Make sure you have:
- Your primary category and all relevant secondary categories selected correctly
- A thorough business description that naturally mentions your main services and city
- Every service listed with descriptions and prices where applicable
- At least 20 to 30 current photos of your work, team, and location
- Accurate business hours including holiday hours
- Regular Google Posts (updates, offers, events) at least once per week
Step 2: Build a Strong Review Engine
Reviews are one of the most powerful ranking signals for Google Maps. It is not just about quantity. Google looks at the recency, diversity, and response rate of your reviews.
Build a system that automatically asks every completed customer for a review. Respond to every review, positive or negative, within 24 hours. A business with 80 recent reviews will almost always outrank a business with 200 older reviews and no responses.
Step 3: Clean Up Your Local Citations
A citation is any place your business name, address, and phone number appear online. If your information is inconsistent across directories like Yelp, BBB, Angi, and your local chamber of commerce, Google loses trust in the accuracy of your listing.
Audit your listings and fix any inconsistencies. Use the exact same format everywhere including your business name, street abbreviations, and phone number format.
Step 4: Optimize Your Website for Local Search
Your website is a major signal for Map Pack rankings. You need:
- Your city and service keywords naturally woven into your homepage title, meta description, and headings
- Dedicated service pages for each major service you offer
- A footer that includes your full address and phone number
- An embedded Google Map on your contact page
- Fast page load speed on mobile
Step 5: Stay Consistent Over Time
Ranking on Google Maps is not a one-time project. It requires ongoing attention. Businesses that keep adding reviews, post regularly, update their content, and build new citations will continue to rise in rankings while competitors who stop maintaining their profiles will slowly fall.
