Why Local Citations Matter for SEO

What Is a Local Citation?
A local citation is any online mention of your business's Name, Address, and Phone number, often abbreviated as NAP. Citations appear on business directory sites like Yelp, BBB, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Thumbtack, your local chamber of commerce, and hundreds of other directories across the web.
Every time your business information appears consistently on a credible website, it sends a trust signal to Google that your business is legitimate, established, and accurately located.
Why Citations Are a Core Local SEO Factor
When Google is deciding which businesses to show in the Map Pack, it is essentially making a trust decision. One of the ways it measures trust is by cross-referencing your business information across the web.
If your business name is "Smith's Plumbing" on Google but listed as "Smith Plumbing LLC" on Yelp, "Smith's Plumbing Services" on the BBB, and your phone number is different on three directories, Google sees those inconsistencies as reliability red flags.
The Two Types of Citations
Structured Citations
These are formal business directory listings where your NAP information appears in a consistent, defined format. Think Yelp, Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Angi, and industry-specific directories.
Unstructured Citations
These are mentions of your business on news sites, blogs, community pages, and local organization websites. Even a mention in a local newspaper article that includes your business name and city counts as an unstructured citation.
How to Build Strong Local Citations
Start with the Big Directories
Make sure your business is listed and fully up to date on Google Business Profile, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, Facebook, BBB, and any industry-specific directories relevant to your trade.
Use the Same NAP Format Everywhere
Pick one exact version of your business name, address format, and phone number, and use it consistently on every listing. If your address is "411 Autumn Blaze, New Braunfels, TX 78130," use that exact format on every single directory. No variations.
Get Listed in Local Directories
Join your local chamber of commerce and get listed on their directory. Look for neighborhood business associations, local blog roundups, and city guides. These hyper-local citations carry extra weight for local Map Pack rankings.
Audit and Fix Existing Listings
Search your business name and phone number online and look for any inaccurate or duplicate listings. Outdated information from an old address or old phone number can dilute your local SEO signals for years if not corrected.
Citations Work Best as Part of a Complete Local SEO Strategy
Building citations alone will not get you to the top of the Map Pack. They work best alongside a fully optimized Google Business Profile, a consistent review strategy, and a properly structured website.
Our complete Local SEO Guide for Service Businesses walks through all the components, including how citations fit into a broader ranking strategy, and what to prioritize first based on where your business stands today.
