How to Choose an Affordable Digital Marketing Agency (Without Getting Burned)

You’ve been burned before. Or you’re afraid you will be. You’ve heard the stories — a friend who signed a 12-month contract and got nothing but a fancy report with no results. A competitor who’s spending $3,000/month and can’t tell you what they’re actually getting for it.

This guide is for the business owner who wants to hire help but doesn’t want to get taken advantage of. We’re going to tell you the red flags, the questions to ask, and what fair pricing looks like — even if you never call us.

The 5 Red Flags

1. Long-term contracts. If an agency requires a 6 or 12-month commitment, that’s not confidence — that’s a cage. A good agency earns your business every month. If they need a contract to keep you, they know their work isn’t good enough to keep you voluntarily. We don’t use contracts at Fresh Bread Digital. 30 days’ notice, done.

2. Vague reporting. “We increased your impressions by 300%!” That’s nice. Did you get more calls? More booked jobs? More revenue? If the report doesn’t connect marketing activity to business outcomes — calls, leads, jobs, revenue — it’s a smokescreen. Ask for the raw data. If they won’t show you the Google Ads dashboard directly, that’s a problem.

3. “Proprietary” dashboards. Some agencies build their own reporting dashboard so you can’t verify the numbers against the source. You should be able to log into your own Google Ads account, your own Google Analytics, your own Google Business Profile. If they set everything up under their own account and won’t transfer ownership, you’re trapped.

4. Guaranteed rankings. No one can guarantee specific Google rankings. Google’s algorithm changes constantly and no agency controls it. What a good agency can guarantee is a process, transparency, and consistent effort. Anyone promising “page 1 in 30 days” is lying or using tactics that will get you penalized later.

5. You can’t reach them. If you have to schedule a call 3 weeks out to talk to your account manager, or if they never pick up the phone, you’re not a client — you’re a subscription. You should be able to reach someone within 24 hours, and ideally the same day.

7 Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  1. Do you require long-term contracts? The answer should be no. Month-to-month, period.
  2. Who owns the accounts? Google Ads, Google Analytics, Google Business Profile, your website — all of it should be in your name. If they say “we manage it for you,” ask how you’d take it with you if you leave.
  3. What exactly am I paying for? Break down the fee: how much is management, how much is ad spend, how much is software. If they can’t separate these, they’re hiding something.
  4. How often will I get reports, and what will be in them? Weekly or monthly. They should include calls, leads, form submissions, and cost per lead — not just impressions and clicks.
  5. Can I see a real client’s results? Not a sanitized case study. A real client, real numbers, and ideally a reference you can call.
  6. What happens if I cancel? You should keep your website, your content, your data, and your accounts. No exit fees.
  7. Do you outsource overseas? Many “local” agencies do. Ask directly. If your account is managed by someone who’s never been to New Braunfels, they don’t know your market.

What Fair Pricing Actually Looks Like

Here’s what we charge, and why. Not because we’re the cheapest — we’re not — but because the structure matters more than the number.

Our Local SEO and PPC plans start at $497/month (ad spend is paid directly to Google or Meta), and social media plans start at $497/month too. Every Growth plan includes FreshLeads, our CRM with an AI Voice Assistant that answers every call 24/7, books the appointment and texts the customer, plus missed-call text-back, review requests and two-way SMS. On its own, FreshLeads is $497/month.

Websites are quoted to scope, with hosting at $97/month.

What makes this fair:

  • No setup fees.
  • No long-term contracts.
  • Ad spend is separate from management fees — you see exactly where every dollar goes.
  • You own everything. Cancel anytime, take it all with you.

If an agency quotes you $1,500/month but can’t tell you how much is management vs. ad spend, or if they bundle everything into one vague “marketing package,” you’re overpaying for opacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $97/month really enough to get results?

It depends on what you need. If you just need a web presence, booking system, and CRM, $97/month covers it. If you need active SEO, PPC, or content creation, those are separate services. The $97 plan is the foundation — not the whole house.

Why don’t you require contracts?

Because we believe in earning your business every month. If we’re not producing results, you should be able to leave. Contracts protect the agency, not the client. We’d rather keep you by doing good work than by trapping you.

What if I’ve already been burned by another agency?

We hear this a lot. The best thing you can do is make sure you own all your accounts (Google Ads, Analytics, Business Profile, website) before you start with anyone new. Ask for month-to-month. Get clear reporting. And if something feels off in the first 60 days, trust your gut and leave.

The Bottom Line

An affordable agency isn’t the cheapest one — it’s the one that’s transparent, accountable, and produces results that justify the cost. Ask the questions above, watch for the red flags, and don’t sign anything that locks you in.
