How Much Do Google Local Services Ads Cost?

Google Local Services Ads cost between roughly $39 and $71 per lead depending on your trade, with a blended average near $53. Unlike Google Ads, you are not charged when someone clicks – you are charged when a customer calls, messages, or books through the ad. Your total spend is controlled by a weekly budget you set.

That is the headline number. The number that actually matters is what you pay per booked job, and that is a different figure entirely. Here is the full breakdown.

Cost Per Lead by Trade

The most useful public dataset comes from an analysis of $6.72 million in Local Services Ads spend across 888 contractor accounts, published in February 2026:

Trade Average cost per lead
Electrical $39
HVAC $51
All trades blended $53
Plumbing $57
Drain and sewer $59
Water heater $71

Source: SearchLight Digital LSA benchmark study, February 2026. Sample sizes vary by trade; the water heater figure comes from a very small sample and should be treated as indicative only.

These are national averages. In dense, competitive metros, cost per lead for the same trade regularly exceeds $90. In smaller markets – and the Texas Hill Country is generally on the friendlier end of this – it often runs below the national figure. Legal, healthcare, and other professional categories sit well above the trades, sometimes in the hundreds per lead.

How LSA Billing Actually Works

This is where Local Services Ads differ most from everything else Google sells:

  • You set an average weekly budget, not a bid. Google spends toward it and caps your monthly charges at roughly that weekly amount multiplied by the average number of weeks in a month.
  • You are billed per lead, not per click. Someone can see your ad, tap your profile, read your reviews, and leave without you paying anything. The charge triggers on contact.
  • Once you hit the monthly cap, your ads stop until the next cycle or until you raise the budget. There is no overspend.
  • There is no minimum spend and no contract. You can set a small budget, test, and adjust weekly.
  • Prices are not fixed. Google adjusts lead prices by category and market over time based on demand.

Your weekly budget is a lead-volume dial, not a spend target. Set it by how many jobs you can actually handle.

What Counts as a Chargeable Lead

Google charges for customer contact that comes through the ad unit and relates to a service you listed. In the US and Canada that includes:

  • A live answered call
  • A voicemail, or a missed call you later return by phone, text, or email
  • A text or email message from the customer
  • A booking request through the ad

The one that catches businesses out: after-hours contact is still chargeable, even if nobody was there to answer. If you are paying for leads around the clock, you need something answering around the clock – which is exactly the gap an automated text-back or AI receptionist fills. We cover that in how missed-call text-back saves you money.

Getting Credit for Bad Leads

Google pre-filters some obviously invalid contacts, reassesses charged leads, and issues automatic credits in the US and Canada. You can also dispute a lead through the feedback survey attached to it.

What Google generally will credit: wrong numbers, spam, robocalls, and customers looking for a service you do not offer and did not list.

What Google generally will not credit:

  • After-hours contacts you did not answer
  • Price shoppers
  • People asking for DIY advice
  • Bookings the customer later cancelled
  • Customers who do not reply when you call back
  • Requests for services you listed on your profile but do not actually perform
  • Areas you temporarily could not serve

Two practical consequences. First, dispute promptly and consistently – Google uses your rejection patterns to send fewer leads like the ones you turn down, so disputing is also targeting. Second, remove services from your profile that you do not genuinely want calls for, because you will be paying for them.

The Number That Matters: Cost Per Booked Job

Cost per lead on its own is close to meaningless. A $40 lead that books 30 percent of the time costs you $133 per job. A $60 lead that books 48 percent of the time costs you $125. The more expensive lead is the cheaper customer.

In the same 2026 dataset, the average book rate across LSA leads was about 44 percent, putting the average cost per paying customer near $233. For comparison, the same study put cost per paying customer from Google Ads search at roughly $472 over the period.

So the honest way to evaluate LSAs is:

  • Cost per booked job = cost per lead divided by your book rate
  • Return = average job value divided by cost per booked job
  • The lever you control most is the book rate, not the lead price

If your book rate is 20 percent, no amount of bid tuning will save the campaign – the problem is answering speed, call handling, or the services you have listed. Our guide to calculating PPC ROI walks through the full math, and the ROI calculators will do it for you.

What Drives Your Cost Up or Down

  • Your trade. Baked in. Emergency and high-ticket categories cost more.
  • Your market. Competition in your service area is the single biggest swing factor. The same trade can differ two to three times between a major metro and a smaller city.
  • Your review profile. Rating and review count feed LSA ranking, and better ranking means more leads for the same budget.
  • Your responsiveness. Google factors in how quickly and reliably you respond. Slow answering costs you ranking, which costs you volume.
  • Your service area size. A wide area brings more leads of lower average relevance. Tightening it usually improves quality.
  • Verification status. Fully verified profiles rank above those still in preliminary checks.

How Much Should You Budget?

Work backwards from capacity, not from a number that feels comfortable:

  1. Decide how many additional jobs per week you can actually take on.
  2. Divide by your realistic book rate to get the leads you need. Ten jobs at a 40 percent book rate means 25 leads.
  3. Multiply by the cost per lead for your trade. Twenty-five leads at $53 is about $1,325 a week.
  4. Start at roughly half that for the first month while you learn your real book rate and lead quality, then scale.

Most single-truck service businesses find a useful starting point somewhere between $500 and $1,500 a month. The mistake is setting a budget you cannot staff for – paying for leads you cannot answer is the fastest way to make LSAs look unprofitable.

How to Lower Your Cost Per Lead

  • Answer every call, fast. The highest-leverage change available, and it improves ranking and book rate at once.
  • Keep reviews coming. LSA ranking leans on them heavily – see how reviews impact local SEO.
  • Prune your job types. Turn off the services with poor margins or low close rates. You stop paying for those leads immediately.
  • Tighten the service area to where you actually want to drive.
  • Dispute bad leads every week. It recovers spend and trains the targeting.
  • Set hours honestly, or cover the off-hours with automation. Do not pay for 2am leads nobody answers.
  • Build the organic side in parallel. Every job you win from the Map Pack is a job you did not buy. Paid and organic local reinforce each other.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Google Local Services Ads cost per lead?

For home service trades, roughly $39 to $71 per lead with a blended average around $53 as of early 2026. Electrical sits at the low end, plumbing and water heater work at the high end. Competitive metros can exceed $90, and professional categories such as legal run considerably higher.

Is there a minimum spend for Local Services Ads?

No. There is no minimum budget and no contract. You set an average weekly budget and can change or pause it at any time. Google caps your monthly charges based on that weekly figure.

Do you pay per click on Local Services Ads?

No. That is the core difference from Google Ads. Clicks and profile views are free; you are charged only when a customer calls, messages, or submits a booking request. Our full comparison is in Local Services Ads vs Google Ads.

Can I get my money back for a bad lead?

Sometimes. Google credits clearly invalid leads such as spam, wrong numbers, and requests for services you do not offer, and issues some credits automatically in the US and Canada. It does not credit price shoppers, cancelled bookings, after-hours contacts you missed, or customers who never call you back. Dispute through the feedback survey on each lead, and do it weekly.

Are Local Services Ads cheaper than Google Ads?

Per acquired customer, usually yes for eligible service trades – the 2026 benchmark data put cost per paying customer at about $233 on LSAs versus about $472 on Google Ads search. But LSAs only cover eligible categories, give you no control over messaging or landing pages, and cap out on volume. Most established service businesses run both.

What happened to the Google Guaranteed badge?

Google consolidated Google Guaranteed, Google Screened, and License Verified by Google into a single Google Verified badge, which changed from a green checkmark to blue in late 2025. The money-back guarantee that used to accompany the Google Guaranteed badge was discontinued at the same time. Existing advertisers were switched over automatically.

Does spending more on LSAs improve my Map Pack ranking?

No. Local Services Ads are a paid placement with no effect on organic local rankings. Those are earned separately – see our guide on ranking higher on Google Maps.

Getting the Math Right Before You Spend

Local Services Ads are one of the few ad products where a small business can genuinely compete with a large one, because the ranking inputs are reviews, responsiveness, and verification rather than budget size. But they punish slow answering harder than any other channel, because you pay whether you pick up or not.

Before you turn them on, know your average job value, your close rate, and who is answering the phone at 7pm. Fresh Bread Digital manages paid advertising for service businesses across the San Antonio to Austin corridor, and we will tell you honestly if LSAs are the wrong first move for your numbers.
